In the application management tool com.enonic.xp.app.applications it is only possible to update applications in Enonic Markets, but no way to go back to an older version. It would be nice to have the ability to downgrade to an older version.

While that is true, there is a possibility to downgrade by pasting the direct URL to an older release’s JAR file into the input field.
Also in the Cloud Console (which is in trial mode for now) there is a possibility to downgrade to any of the existing releases of any application.

Valid point, we are already implementing this in the self service cloud - and we will eventually proxy this into XP as well.
In the meantime, use the upload workaround described by Alan
